This unique atlas allows you to experience the transformation of Hiroshima from the moment the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945 to the present day, using maps as a medium for reflection and understanding.
One side features a map of Hiroshima in 1945, showing the extent of the devastation immediately after the bombing. The other side maps out present-day Hiroshima, highlighting ¡Èatomic-bomb heritage sites¡É—structures, trees, and other remnants that survived the bombing and continue to tell the story of what happened. (The Atomic Bomb Dome is perhaps the most well-known example.)
Alongside the maps, the booklet includes historical context, data on the damage, and records of the city's gradual recovery. In a world where wars are still ongoing, this work invites readers to pause and reflect on the realities of war and the enduring value of peace.
Message from the Creators
We created this map to help people visualize the unimaginable—Hiroshima as it was in 1945—and to feel the continuity between past and present by placing the two maps back to back.
We also hope readers will take this booklet in hand and walk through the city of Hiroshima, which continues to send a message of peace to the world.
By retracing the memories of history, each step taken through the city can become a step toward peace.
